The Loyalist Student Government was pleased to assist Disability Services in hosting WordQ & SpeakQ, as part of their Reading and Writing Tools for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities Workshop series. The event on Thursday, March 26 in Alumni Hall was facilitated by Cherith Sinasac, from Strategic Transitions Inc. who explained how WordQ, SpeakQ and Inspiration(r) software can support and enhance the writing process.
WordQ is a simple yet powerful writing tool designed specifically to make writing easier. It provides immediate auditory feedback, in-context word prediction and a readback feature. SpeakQ is a plug-in software that enhances WordQ with simple, text-to-speech functionality. Diagrams, outlines and mind maps can be created with the use of Inspiration(r), an award-winning tool used by students, ages 10 to adult.
Participants were introduced to the development of these products and how they work together to support writers in developing thinking skills to visually plan, analyze, organize and communicate clearly.
Writers do not need to be limited by their spelling, memory or language skills. The workshop focused on how these tools can enable them to overcome obstacles to their reading and writing success, and thereby improve their ability to communicate effectively. – Ted Morrison, Assistive Technician/Support Services Worker for Disability Services
